Guinea
At least 20 people are reported to have been injured in two days of clashes between the military and residents of Mali-ville, a city in the northern part of Guinea.
The confrontation follows an attack on a truck driver by some military personnel.
The truck driver according to witnesses had slowed down to maneuver a muddy portion of the road.
His action however slowed down the convoy of one Colonel Issa Camara, said to be the military commander in the city, which was speeding.
Unhappy with the turn of events, the soldiers with permission from their commander reportedly assaulted the truck driver leaving him for dead.
The resident of the town having heard about the attack on the driver, then confronted the military who were said to be using live ammunition.
Th soldiers are also reported to have vandalised and torched shops in the city forcing many of the residents to flee into the bush.
An appeal for the soldiers to calm down from the region’s governor, Sadio Keita failed to yield any results, RFI reported as the soldiers would only take instruction from Colonel Camara, a move described by some as a rebellion against state authority.
Colonel Camara has reportedly been relieved of duty as a result of the incident.
